I don't like to brag or anything, but I know a lot about makeup.
Okay - maybe half of that statement is a lie. I definitely like to brag a little when something awesome is going on. However, I also definitely have a vast and experienced relationship with makeup, so I'm going to say that the second half is totally true and thus I can talk about it knowledgeably for hours and hours on end (as is proven by my job). A lot of people I know and love do not have the same passion for makeup as I and, well. Here we are.
I may have gotten a little carried away.
When you're just starting out looking into makeup and wandering down the aisles in like, Target (I always recommend Target for cosmetics unless you're specifically looking for Wet 'n' Wild or Hard Candy, but that's besides the point), it can be super overwhelming. I get overwhelmed. There's just so much to look at and trying to figure out what half the products are even for and how they're different from the ones sitting next to them is not easy! That's why I sat down and thought about what the four most basic yet most important products in my personal makeup collection are and if I could live on them alone.
I tried it for about a week, just the four products I have photographed below - a BB cream for light coverage on my face with a ton of SPF; a neutral, long-lasting, shimmery cream shadow; a dramatic mascara to open up my eyes; and a fun, bright lipstick to make me look really put together - and it worked really well for me. I didn't miss out on all my extra products like concealer (I built up the BB cream on any problem areas on my skin for extra coverage) or blush (fun fact from my dance days - lipstick doubles as a cream blush!!!), though I will say as someone with oily skin the next product I'd buy is a mattifying powder (Rimmel Stay Matte Translucent is my fave) because by the end of the day I was a little bit shinier than I'd like.
What you'd pick for your fifth product after is totally up to your makeup needs! Some people may want to fill in their eyebrows, or get an eyeliner or a concealer or anything! Maybe you don't like my suggestions! But the point of a starter kit is to give you an idea of where to start; you can figure out what you like and what you don't from there. :)
Happy shopping!!!

Products: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Light, Maybelline Color Tattoo in Barely Branded, Maybelline The Falsies Flared in Blackest Black, Covergirl Lip Perfection in 405 Fairytale.
All of these products have been in and out of my daily routine for quite some time now. They're definitely all a great value for their drugstore price.
